BLUE RIDGE TRAILS & SCENIC DRIVES

🏞️ Blue Ridge Trails

Explore the natural beauty of the area, from challenging mountain hikes to leisurely riverside paths.

🧗 Signature Parkway Hikes

  • Crabtree Falls: One of the most famous and impressive waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. The trail features a series of cascades totaling over 1,200 feet in descent. (Activity: Moderate to Strenuous Hiking)
  • Humpback Rocks: A popular destination right off the Blue Ridge Parkway (milepost 5.8). The steep, 2-mile roundtrip climb leads to a magnificent rock formation with unmatched 360-degree views of the Shenandoah Valley and Rockfish Valley. (Activity: Strenuous Climb, Excellent Views)
  • The Priest Wilderness (A.T. Access): For serious hikers, this area provides access to the Appalachian Trail, including the challenging ascent of The Priest peak (over 4,000 feet). A true wilderness experience. (Activity: Strenuous, All-Day Hiking)

💦 River & Water Access

  • James River State Park: Offering nearly 1,500 acres of rolling hills and river frontage, ideal for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. They offer rentals and organized trips. (Activity: Paddling, Fishing, Hiking)
  • Panther Falls: A beautiful, multi-tiered waterfall and swimming hole on the Pedlar River. A great, short hike (less than 1 mile) followed by a refreshing swim in the warmer months. (Activity: Short Hike, Swimming (Seasonal))

🚶 Local Walks & Rides

  • Virginia Blue Ridge Railway Trail: A local favorite for easy recreation, this nearly 10-mile trail follows an abandoned railway line. Perfect for walking, jogging, and biking, offering beautiful, level views through woodlands and fields.
